Program Priorities

The purpose of the Montessori approach with the pre-school child is not to rush her/him headlong into academic subjects before other children are customarily confronted with them, but rather to help develop within the child the fundamental attitudes, understanding, habits and skills essential for a lifetime of creative learning.

The school owes its existence to the initial and continuing commitment of parents to the idea that pre-school education plays a crucial role in their children’s lives. The young child is best served by an educational method that includes a set of developmental materials, an encouraging classroom environment, and an opportunity for each child to proceed as her or his needs dictate.

The school is organized as a privately funded corporation, and is licensed by the state of Wisconsin.

Our staff consists of a Montessori trained teacher/director who holds an American Montessori Society credential for the education of young children, and Montessori trained teaching assistants. A number of our staff has been working with young children for several years. All members of our staff are college graduates in the field of education.

About North Country

Our new 3,000 sq.ft. facility is located on 2.5 wooded acres, just 1/3 mile east of Hwy. 47 on County Hwy J in Woodruff, WI. The school was specifically designed by a Montessori architect. The school building includes many child-height architectural features such as separate entry and exit doors, a reading loft and low windows and sinks. The child-sized architecture gives children the sense of equality and empowerment, and reinforces the basic Montessori principles of fostering self-confidence and self-esteem.

Outdoor Learning Opportunities

The 10,000 sq.ft. outdoor environment is an extension of the indoor classroom. It encourages the development of gross motor skills and enables children to explore and discover plants, animals and the natural environment of the open sky.
